How To Help Someone Quit Smoking
Trying to Quit
I'm 36 years old and have been a smoker for nearly 20 years. I've tried to quit before, but when I get into stressful situations, I find myself unable to resist the temptation to reach for a cigarette. I want to see my kids grow up! Can you give me any advice on sticking with quitting?

You are not alone. Stress is a common trigger for smoking. The first thing to remember, though, is that smoking may be more than just a bad habit. Nicotine is addictive. While stress can definitely lead to smoking, you may also be experiencing a physiological craving.
Studies have shown that for many smokers, the appropriate use of nicotine replacement products can substantially increase the likelihood of successfully quitting. But success requires more than just chewing a gum or sticking on a patch. You should consult a knowledgeable health-care provider, and closely follow a product's directions to be sure you are getting the most out of it.
One reason people smoke in response to stress is to soothe themselves — and it works. If you cut out this very effective (though unhealthy) coping strategy without finding alternative ways to calm yourself, of course you will turn back to cigarettes. Most people already know some great ways to relax; they just forget to use them and automatically pick up a cigarette.
That's why I suggest that you create a list of things you find relaxing — things that take about the same amount of time as smoking one cigarette. They can include pausing and doing a deep-breathing exercise, taking a five-minute stroll outside or around your building, doing yoga or stretches, or listening to music. Write these ideas on a piece of paper and keep it handy. When you find yourself feeling stressed, reach for an idea before you reach for a cigarette.
