Simple and affordable ways to restore the table

A task. It is given: an old piece of furniture, but very dear to the heart, namely, a table. The question is how to bring it to its original appearance, to restore its former beauty and functionality, or to ennoble it? The answer in this problem is quite simple - the table can and should be restored, and this can be done with your own hands quickly and beautifully.

Many introductory components of this task fall entirely on the shoulders of the “restorer,” more precisely, on his imagination and skills. The richer the fantasy, the better. But the various skills and possession of different tools impose some restrictions, but it is not so important to abandon the idea of restoring the table. Any tool can be mastered in the process. So, let's begin to solve our problem.

Paint, enamel or varnish

Of course, you can go the simplest way and simply paint a dilapidated table or varnish it. At the same time, its functionality will be restored, it will be possible to use the table for a very long time, for example, until the next painting in a different color, according to your mood.

You can cover the table top with lacquer. You can even use aerosol enamels that give beautiful glossy surfaces. But what about fantasy? How is the creative process? If we take up the matter, then I want to do it with a soul and give the simple interior object an author's style. And it is quite easy to do.

Coffee table

Diagnostics showed that "the patient is more alive than dead." Coffee tables, as a rule, have a small size, are not used with large loads and in extreme conditions, therefore, they suffer mainly from the table top. Most often - it is scratches, scuffs or shabby corners. What can be done in this case?

Checking the table for strength and, if necessary, twisting and pulling the legs, we estimate the real degree of damage. If these are large scratches in the center, then we will mask them using the decoupage technique.

Do not be frightened by this overseas word. This technique is very simple. Take a beautiful paper napkin with a pattern. Carefully cut out the pattern or ornament. We apply PVA glue with a wide brush both on the table top and on the image. Simply sticking. Ornament or pattern can be selected in the ensemble with the surrounding colors or style of upholstered furniture.

The table top dried well. We take acrylic varnish and cover it in several layers.Lacquer can be colorless, or with pigment. A slight discoloration can spice up the table and make it a “highlight of the program” in your living room.

This piece of furniture "inhabits" most often in children's and teenage rooms. Behind him they do homework, draw, mold from plasticine and generally do a lot of interesting things. For small users of desks it does not matter the condition of the work surface. Adults are much more thrifty in this regard. Well, let's return the former greatness to the long-suffering desk.

Since its functionality is in the first place, we will pay less attention to the aesthetic form. The tabletop must be very carefully cleaned of all foreign inclusions - glue, clay, paint. Then cut exactly the size of the glass, with a thickness of at least 4 mm.

Please note, the edges of the glass should be very carefully polished, and the sharp corners are rounded. Ideally, it is better to make a chamfer, but this is possible only in a glass workshop. If you have never used a glass cutter before - entrust it to a professional.

You can sand the edges using medium-grained emery paper; you only need to constantly wet the edge of the glass with water. Glass is ready.

On the surface of the table we place various useful images - the alphabet, mathematical formulas, rules of grammar - anything. You can put on the table just a beautiful reproduction of your favorite artist or an image of a cartoon hero. And now we are putting glass on top. The table is ready. And no damage to him is not terrible.

Glass is a very resistant material to dirt. In addition, it is not afraid of water. The main thing that it was not thin and exactly the same size. Then it will have sufficient weight and will be fixed motionless.

It is not necessary to mention that the images under the glass can be changed as often as desired. Perhaps such a method could not be called a restoration in the classical sense, but the goal has been achieved, and this is the main thing.

Here everything is a little more complicated. Tables in the kitchen "are experiencing great stress." High temperatures, grease, water can permanently destroy the tabletop. But breathing new life into it is also possible.

The first and simplest is to glue it over with a self-adhesive film. We select the picture and color in accordance with the style of the kitchen. Such films are not afraid of water, sufficiently resistant to cleaning agents. For sticking, it is better to use a spatula to expel air bubbles from under the film. But if the tiny “blots” still remain, just pierce the bubble with a needle, let the air out and smooth out.

Sometimes an excellent solution can be considered the use of oilcloth. Perhaps it is not so durable, but, nevertheless, is functional. It is necessary to cut a cloth of oilcloth, taking into account allowances on the perimeter. Unscrew the legs, remove the countertop. Wrap it with oilcloth on one side, secure with a stapler.

Then, tightly enough and, if possible, evenly pull the oilcloth on the opposite side. Secure with a stapler around the perimeter. By the way, the choice of oilcloths is now so varied that you can choose not only the appropriate colors, but also thickness and heat resistance.

There is another way of restoration, it is somewhat extravagant. Directly on the countertop of the kitchen table, put ceramic tiles, better mosaic. Thoroughly rub the joints with grout and the almost eternal table is ready. At the same time, its total weight will not increase much, but in terms of functionality, ceramic tiles in the kitchen are beyond competition.

As a rule, wooden furniture from solid wood and valuable wood species is more durable. But, nevertheless, time does not spare such tables. The technology of restoration of such objects is quite complicated - it is both the removal of the original lacquer layer, and the filling of deep scratches, and the restoration of the coating. It is better not to approach this process unprepared, and it is better to consult a specialist. Otherwise, you can damage the expensive table even more.

We should also mention the legs of the tables. The table should not stagger, move and generally be crooked. The easiest way out is to change legs if they are in a deplorable state. But sometimes it is enough just to change the fixing accessories (nuts, screws) to restore the former stability to the table.

The legs can be painted, varnished, enameled - you can do anything with them. The main thing is that they are smooth and strong. In the most extreme cases, sustainability can be maintained by pulling the table legs off with an additional crossbar if this is constructively permissible, for example, does not interfere with sitting or pushing a chair.

The restoration of the old table can and should be done.First, it will return you a useful piece of furniture, and secondly, the creative process is always fascinating. Do not throw away the old furniture, attach talent and hands to her salvation, and it will delight you for a long time.
