Owl from a fairy tale
Recently, more and more owners of private houses and country sites, tired of the ubiquitous plastic decorations, prefer to draw up their possessions in the ethnic, folk, and sometimes even the fabulous style. Such an environment allows adults to get rid of man-made stress and gives free rein to children's imagination, contributing to a full-fledged family vacation. One of the main elements of the fairy-tale style is a garden sculpture made of wood. Finished products are quite expensive and not always suitable for a particular site, but with a simple tool, desire and a couple of evenings of free time, everyone can make a garden sculpture of wood with their own hands. In our example, the wise and keen owl . With its easily recognizable features, the sculptural image of an owl looks spectacular both on the veranda and in the middle of the garden. It is convenient to use lime as a material. Fit wood that has lain in a dry place for at least six months, with a minimum number of knots, cracks and other defects. • To begin, we saw off a workpiece 40–50 centimeters long and fasten it for convenience with a self-tapping screw on a piece of plywood.• With the help of an ax and, if it is possible, a special disc on wood at LBM, we will shape the outlines of the future sculpture.
• Next is the work ka small details. You can pre-schedule the main lines or rely on your own eye. Work should be sharpened with an ordinary knife or knife-jamb. It would be great if in the arsenal there will be one - two semicircular chisels. The point must be periodically adjusted on a leather belt with polishing paste. Extreme care must be taken to prevent injury. If possible, the tool should be held with both hands, the workpiece should be securely fastened on the table. The approximate result of this stage is shown in the photo.• Now you should take care of the finish. The resulting product is processed tinted protective structures, designed for operation outdoors. It is better to choose the color closer to the natural.• In order to remove the raised nap and revive the plumage, lightly process the product with an emery paper with fine grain.• The sculpture thoroughly cleaned from dust grinding is covered with two layers of weather-resistant varnish.• When the varnish is completely dry, the finishing touches are made: fill the pupils with black paint, and cover the eye circumference itself with a composition glowing in the dark, for example, with “Firefly” varnish.By placing the resulting sculpture so that it was lit in the daytime, but not immediately struck, it is possible to surprise.
