How to Use the wikiHow Editor's Toolbar

Steps

  1. Use Mozilla Firefox as your browser.It runs on Windows, Linux and Mac.

Installing the Toolbar

  1. Right-click on and download the toolbar.The wikihowtoolbar.xpi icon will appear in your Firefox Downloads window automatically.
  2. Click "Save link As".The file will either be saved to your desktop (default location for Firefox), or to wherever you select.
    • Windows: Open a new tab or browser window. Drag the "wikihowtoolbar.xpi" icon from where it was saved to the open Firefox window.
    • Macintosh: Double-click on the "wikihowtoolbar.xpi" icon to begin the installation.
      1. Click "Install Now" and follow the self-explanatory directions.
      2. Restart your browser to complete the process.

Using the Toolbar

  1. Double-click to open the application with Firefox.
    • Click on "Edit Options" if a yellow warning bar appears at the top of your browser window.
      1. Click on the blue "Allow" button to permit wikiHow to install extensions on Firefox (note that you should only allow trusted websites to install Firefox extensions).
      2. Double-click again to resume the installation process.
      3. Click "Install Now" and follow the self-explanatory directions.
      4. Restart your browser to complete the process.
  2. Look at the toolbar which should now be on the top of your browser.
  3. Understand each feature by looking at them from right to left:
    • The Happy Monkey - When the happy monkey is showing all is well with the Featured Articles: All edits on current featured articles have been patrolled. On the other hand, when the monkey stops smiling, and the surprised face shows this means that there is an unpatrolled edit on a featured article. When you see this please click the surprised face and decide whether you want to approve (e.g. patrol), cleanup or revert the edit.
    • Patrol counter - This shows how many edits that you have patrolled in the last 24 hours.
    • The Editor Counter - This shows how many registered users have made an edit in the last 30 minutes. Click it see a list of recent changes done by logged in users.
    • The Unpatrolled Edit Counter - This shows the total number of unpatrolled edits on the website. In this example it shows only 33 unpatrolled edits - good work ! The Unpatrolled Edit Counter measures wikiHow's "weather," which gets worse the more unpatrolled edits there are:
      • Sunny: 0-149 Unpatrolled edits
      • Partly Cloudy: 150-499 Unpatrolled Edits
      • Cloudy: 500-999 Unpatrolled Edits
      • Rainy: 1000-1499 Unpatrolled Edits
      • Lightning: 1500+ Unpatrolled Edits
    • The New Talk Page Message Indicator - This lights up and becomes red as shown here when you have a new message on your talk page.
    • The Random Article Button - Press this to be taken to a random page.
    • Settings Tool - Press this to change settings. Click on this to turn sounds on or off, or to change the delay before notification of FA edits.
    • Search Box - Use this to search any of the following: wikiHow articles (default setting), wikiHow users, wikiHow Namespace, wikiHow in Google (can be useful when normal search fails), Wikimedia commons (use to find more free photos). Click on the blue arrow to select which space you would like to search.

Removing the Toolbar

  1. If you do not want to use the toolbar any more, follow these instructions to remove it.
  2. ClickTools > Add-Onson the menu bar.
  3. FindwikiHow Toolbarin the list.
  4. Select it.
  5. Click on the "Uninstall" button beneath.
  6. Restart Firefox.

  • A wikiHow toolbar optimized for the Google Chrome browser offers most, but not all of the functionalities offered in the Firefox toolbar.
  • Customize the Firefox toolbar by clicking the wrench icon to change the settings.
    • You can enable or disable sounds.
    • If you would like to not be notified of FA edits immediately when they occur, use the Settings Tool to delay notification for 2 or 5 minutes.
  • The FA monkey does not flash for your own FA article edits.
  • The toolbar updates itself every minute. Thus if you patrol the featured article it will continue to show the unpatrolled surprised face for up to 1 minute until the toolbar is updated.
  • With the new toolbar, when you hit skip on a FA patrol, you won't be notified of that edit.
  • New updates to the toolbar will be added automatically.
  • Like all wikiHow software, the toolbar is licensed under the GPL, please feel free to modify or reuse it for your own wiki projects.
  • The wikiHow toolbar is still in beta and may have some rough edges. Please help us improve it by reporting bugs or suggesting new features.

Warnings

  • Only users using the Mozilla Firefox browser version 1.5 - 3.0pre may download the toolbar. It doesn't work with other browsers.
  • Be sure to click- "accept third-party cookies" in your Privacy settings of the Options panel (under the Tools menu).
