Fast & Easy French Twist Method (Secured 3 Different Ways)

How To Do a French Twist

When it comes to weekend hairstyles, we admit it: sometimes we want to show off a little. Give us a pretty style that lookscomplicated (but really isn’t) and we’re way into it. And there’s no style more elegant than the classic French twist.

Most famous as Audrey Hepburn’s go-to style inBreakfast at Tiffany’s, the French twist has a bit of an unfortunate reputation as being overly fussy and dated-looking. But that couldn’t be further from the truth—keeping it loose makes it summery, modern and dangerously chic.

But the best part? It’s totally easy—we promise. Here’s how to get the ultimate French twist.

1. Start with second (or even third-day) hair. If you’ve washed your hair recently, add a texturizing product likeR+Co Aircraft Pomade Mousse ()to rough up hair and add grip to soft strands. You can also use a salt spray if that works better for your hair type.

2. You now have two styling options: keep your French twist sleek, or make it messier. For a slightly undone look, use a fine-tooth comb or teasing brush to lightly tease the hair at your crown and on either side of your head. If you’d rather have a sleek look, spritz some medium-hold hairspray onto your hair and brush it through to take flyaways and add shine.

3. Pull all of your hair back and hold it at the back of your head, like you’re about to do a medium-height ponytail. Walk your hands back to the ends of the “tail” and begin coiling your hair into a roll. This roll should face to either the left or right, depending on which you’re more comfortable with. (Pro tip: if you have lots of layers, the roll may not stay together. Lightly tease the lengths prior to rolling to help keep the hair all together.)

4. Keep coiling your hair until your roll is up against your head, then pin the rolled side down to the rest of your hair. We prefer using U-shaped bobby pins for this, as they give great hold without flattening your twist.

5. If you’re going for an undone look, now is the time to loosen the hair around your crown by gently pulling at it. If you’d like to single out any sections for wispy tendril purposes, now is the time to do it. Just make sure that when you’re tugging sections of hair out of your French twist, you do so GENTLY. You don’t want to accidentally free your entire roll and have to start over!

6. If you want a sleek look, use a natural bristled brush to smooth down any flyaways and add shine. Don’t press too hard into the scalp; you’re only smoothing, not grooming.

7. Voila! You now have a perfect French Twist. Hit it with some hairspray and head out to brunch with the ultimate in chic weekend hair.
