My 10-year-old nephew was just diagnosed with natural killer T-cell lymphoma (nasal type). I have been unable to find info on this type of lymphoma. Can you direct me to where I might get further information, or can you tell me about this type of lymphoma? The family was told that it is rare and untreatable except for experimental treatment. Thank you for your help.
This is an unusual type of lymphoma and is much more common in Asia and parts of Latin America than in the United States. Abnormal growths or tumors usually appear in the nasal cavity, but can be found throughout the upper gastrointestinal tract. The cause of this cancer is unknown, but researchers speculate it could be related to the Epstein-Barr virus.
Nasal lymphoma is aggressive, but it is treatable, particularly in the early stages before it has spread. Radiation therapy, usually in combination with chemotherapy, is the cornerstone to treatment. If at all possible, I would recommend that your nephew be seen at a large, tertiary care cancer center (tertiary meaning care that has been referred to specialists) where lymphoma experts can review his case and make specific treatment recommendations.
