There it is at the end!

Ages and ages ago HBO confirmed in an official statement thatGame Of Thronesseason 8 would indeed not be with us until 2019.

The statement read: "The epic fantasy seriesGame of Throneswill return for its six-episode, eighth and final season in 2019.

"David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, David Nutter and Miguel Sapochnik will be the directors for the new season. Writers for the new season are David Benioff & D.B. Weiss, Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill.

"The executive producers of the series are David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, Carolyn Strauss, Frank Doelger and Bernadette Caulfield. Co-executive producers are Bryan Cogman, Guymon Casady, Vince Gerardis and George R.R. Martin."

We kinda already knew this because Sophie Turner, who plays Sansa Stark confirmed to that the eighth and final season ofGOTwon't air until 2019 but we were hoping she might have got her wires crossed or summat. She said: "I'm really excited.Game Of Thronescomes out in 2019." She added that HBO's hit series still has "six or seven months left" of production, before joking, "we started in October, so we’re maybe like a tenth of the way through."

Game Of Thrones season 8 first look

On 27th August we got our very first look atGame Of Thronesseason 8 in the shape of this HBO trailer. Check it out!

And then Jon Snow (Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) were looking rather regal in a glimpse from season 8 on the cover ofEntertainment Weekly. And, er, they don't *really* look any different. BUT, in the interview to accompany the first look, executive producer Bryan Cogman teased:

"It's about all of these disparate characters coming together to face a common enemy, dealing with their own past, and defining the person they want to be in the face of certain death.

"It's an incredibly emotional, haunting, bittersweet final season and I think it honours very much what [author George RR Martin] set out to do – which is flipping this kind of story on its head."

How many episodes will there be inGame Of Thronesseason 8?

We’ve been told by the showrunners thatGame Of Thronesseason 8 will be another short one. We’re looking at six episodes.

How long will the episodes be inGame Of Thronesseason 8?

Okay, so we’re getting fewer episodes, but we were told a while ago that they will be longer. It’s looking like instead of an hour for each episode, season 8 could boast 80-minute episodes. And there may even be feature-length episodes.

"Two hours per episode seems like it would be excessive, but it's a great show, so who knows?" HBO's Casey Bloys said.

And Liam Cunninghma, who play Ser Davos, revealed in October to TV Guide: "[The episodes are] definitely going to be bigger and what I hear is longer.

"We're filming right up until the summer.

"When you think about it, up until last season we'd have six months to do ten episodes, so we're [doing] way more than that for six episodes. So that obviously will translate into longer episodes."

Then in November the show's director, David Nutter, revealed that every single episode will be longer than an hour. During a Reddit AMA, when he was asked about the length of the upcoming final season episodes, David replied: "Season eight episodes will all I think be longer than 60 minutes. They'll be dancing around the bigger numbers, I know that for sure."

Has the script forGame Of Thronesseason 8 been written?

Yes. Yes it has. HBO’s Casey confirmed this in 2019, but, of course, everyone’s keeping tight-lipped about what will actually happen in the final season.

WillGames of Thronesseason 8 be the final season?

Sadly yes. The president of programming at HBO Michael Lombardo has previously saidGame Of Throneswould end after eight seasons.

"David and Dan are feeling there's probably two more years after season six, that's what we're looking at right now," he said in January before season 7 aired.

And in June last year, HBO’s Casey said: The showrunners have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. If I could get them to do more I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they [need] to make the best version of their show."

Game Of Thronesseason 8 cast

Right now, we don’t know for sure who will be back forseason 8, but we sure as hell know who won’t … (RIP).

Although, annoyingly (depending on how you look at it), it looks like Cersei will be back for season 8.

In a recent interview, Lena Headey (who plays that bitch) hinted that her character makes it to the end of season 7.

"I [assumed] oh, I'm going to die," she toldTime, recalling reading the script. "And then, I went straight to the end. I was really in shock. I think obviously, now, there's got to be some body count at the end of [season] 8."

But what will happen to her brother/lover (still so, so gross) in season 8?

Now that he’s left the Red Keep, Jaime has a big decision to make - he could either go straight to The Wall to sort those damn wights or he could inform Jon and Dany about Cersei’s lie.

Nikolaj Coster-Walder toldIndieWire: “I think he’s going to try to get up there. We see him covering up his golden hand because once he’s heading North, he’s in enemy territory, and it’s difficult to hide who he is when he has that golden hand. So I think he’s going to try to get up to some commander whether it’s Jon Snow or Daenerys Targaryen. We’ll see.”

If Jaime survives, will he return to Cersei?

“I think that you never finish with your family even if you want to,” he said. “It’s the thing that Tyrion says that there’s not a day that he doesn’t think about the fact that he killed his father even though he hated him… I’m sure for Jaime it’ll be the same. He’ll never be able to not have Cersei be a part of what makes him what he is.”

Game of Thrones Season 7

Ser Davos is also on his way to the eighth series and he can't believe his luck!

He toldEsquire, "I feel like I'm at Wimbledon and I'm going to the final. It's funny you should say, knowing how good the quality of the show is, you go, 'Oh man, I hope I make it to the last season.' Of course, being a typical actor, now that I've made it to the final season, I want to make it to the final episode."

Word on the street/Watchers On The Wallis that season 8 producers are currently looking for two young actors.

One casting notice is for a Northern girl, ideally around the age of eight. The character seems very similar to Lyanna Mormont, as she’s supposed to be fearless and tell it like it is. They’re looking for a “strong-minded young girl with a fighting spirit,” and the part would film the week of 17 November. Watchers On The Wall speculates the girl could be related to Lyanna Mormont, or a member of another prominent Northern family—perhaps a family that falls to the White Walkers.

The second casting notice is for a boy around the same age, or possibly a few years older. The boy, who may be in multiple scenes, is described as a poor child who has had to fight for everything he has. The actor would need to be available for filming at the end of November and the end of December. Watchers On The Wall thinks this child is likely going to show up in Kings Landing or Essos, since the casting notice doesn’t specify accent or much about appearances.

Exciting!

AnotherThronescasting could end up being MASSIVE, if you're personally attached to the fan theory that the leader of the Golden Company would be none other than... Daenerys' former lover Daario Naharis!

Fan site Watchers On The Wall has reported that Marc Rissmann has been cast as Harry Strickland, although it's now been removed from his Spotlight CV. Strickland is the leader of the Golden Company, which is the group of mercenaries that Cersei tells Jamie she is going to make an alliance with through Euron Greyjoy.

So if Marc really has been cast, then there might not be any more Daario. WHYGODWHY?!

Another popular theory that may or may not have been ruined by casting news is the one about Meera Reed being Jon Snow's twin.

A whole load ofGOTfans believe that Meera and Jon Snow are actually twins, who were both born to Lyanna Stark shortly before her death at the Tower of Joy.

Meera Reed

But seeing as Ellie Kendrick, who plays Meera, hasn't actually been invited back to film season 8, there's a chance the character won't be back, and the twin theory will be forced to die.

"I don't know [if I'll be back]," she told . "It's funny because I always get asked, 'What's going to happen? Are you in it?'

"Genuinely, the truth is I don't know. I wait for the phone to ring and then I find out, but it hasn't rung so I don't know. I'll find out whether I am or not at some point, but for now I haven't been notified so I'm yet to discover."

The latest casting for season 8 ofGame Of Thronescould very well mean the return of a certain house we'd rather thought we'd seen the back of.

Watchers On The Wall (thanks again, guys) has picked up on the casting of a new character in the form of Irish actress Danielle Galligan.

According to her IMDb, Danielle will be playing a character named Sarra. The only time we've heard of a Sarra is inA Song Of Ice And Fire.Sarra Frey is one of Walder Frey's countless granddaughters.

Great... so it looks like we'll be seeing more of the Freys in season 8. Eurgh.

But the good news is, one of our favourite and fluffiest characters is officially returning for the final season. Ghost is back!

Game Of Thronesvisual effects supervisor, Joe Bauer, confirmed the exciting news, tellingHuffington Post: "Oh, you’ll see him again. He has a fair amount of screen time in season 8.”

We've not seen Ghost since the early episodes of season six, when he accompanied Jon as he left Castle Black for Winterfell after coming back from the dead. No biggie...

Game Of Thronessequels, prequels, spin-offs and movies

Okay, so we’ve only got one more series ofGame Of Thronesiegoodness – but what about a possible sequel, prequel or even a movie? That'd be cool, right?

When asked about the prospect of any of these things happening, author George R Martin said in April, "There is certainly no lack of material. There are eight million stories in Westeros as well… and even more in Essos and the lands beyond. A whole world full of stories, waiting to be told… if indeed HBO is interested."

If a prequel does end up happening, we reckon it could feature one of these stories: Aegon’s Conquest, The Valyrian Freehold, The Long Night, The Dance of the Dragons, Maegor the Cruel or The Blackfyre Rebellion.

Speaking specifically about aGOTmovie, George R Martin said: "It might need a feature to tie things up. Something with a feature budget, like 0million for two hours. Those dragons get real big, you know..."

How about a revival then?

Well network boss Casey Bloys is already ruling out the possibility that the door will be left open for revisiting years from now. Great. That's just great...

"That's not happening," he told . "This story,A Song Of Ice and Fire, is done. There's no revival, reboot, spinoff talk."

Oh. So, despite all that's previously been said, it looks like season 8 really will be the end ofGame Of Thrones.

Booooooooooooooooooooo.

Game Of Thrones returns to Sky Atlantic next year.
