Being a baby rocks. People coddle and fawn over you, and your day revolves around sleeping and eating. Too bad most of us don't remember those times because of a little thing called childhood amnesia. But we do forget specific events—what scientists call episodic memories—because it's a time when our brains produce new neurons at lightning speed, and our hippocampus (the area of our brain where these memories are stored) gets crowded, making it harder to store and recall things later.
