Caring for a flower in Alocasia
If you like ornamental plants with juicy dense leaves, then alokaziya, for sure, will be to your taste. This exotic plant practically does not bloom at home, however, it is recognized as one of the most beautiful decorative and deciduous flowers that can be grown in normal indoor conditions.
In the people it is also called “elephant ear”, which is due to the special shape of its leaves - oval, dense, heart-like, and decorated with light crisp veins.
Alocasia belongs to the aroid family and has about 50 species, each of which differs in shape, size, color of leaves, and so on. At home, you can grow not all species, the most common is alokaziya Kalidor, Lowy, clobuchkovaya and fragrant.
Immediately it should be noted that this plant is poisonous, its juice is especially dangerous, which can accidentally fall on the mucous membrane of the eye or mouth, for example, when a flower is transplanted. Therefore, when caring for this beauty, you need to follow certain rules of caution, not to allow children and pets to them, in general, alokaziya does not pose a particular threat to life.
Despite the difference in species, all alokazii have a common feature: their leaves are not stem, as in most other plants, but basal. At home, usually the height of the plant does not exceed 70-100 cm, while each leaf grows to 20 cm in width.
In natural tropical conditions, azalea can grow up to several meters, but this should not be feared at home. However, it must be said that a meter-wide enough sprawling plant is not always easy to place in a small apartment, so the beauty “place of residence” needs to be thought in advance.
Blossoms alocasia in the conditions of the apartment is extremely rare, while this ability is available only in adult individuals. If you are still lucky enough to achieve the flowering of your pet, then you may be a little disappointed: the flowers themselves are bright and rather nondescript, however, gathering into an inflorescence, they have a very unusual look.
After pollination on the ground flowers form berries, inside which are seeds.By the way, stems and leaves of some species in China are used in folk medicine, however, we must not forget that the plant is poisonous and, without much experience, it is not worth trying to use it for medicinal purposes.
How to grow alocasia at home?
In general, care for such a flower is not particularly difficult: if you comply with all the basic requirements, which are not so many, alocasia will long please you with its juicy and beautiful appearance.
Particular attention should be paid to room temperature, since the plant is tropical, it does not like the cold and large fluctuations of degrees. The optimal limits in winter is 18 ° -20 °, in summer the temperature can increase to 26 °. In addition, it is important to protect the flower from drafts - they can be disastrous for him.
The next moment is lighting. Young alokazii require more light for rapid growth and development, older representatives prefer slightly darkened places.
The ideal location in the apartment is the eastern or western windows, but on the south it is better to use small curtains for the darkening. In any case, we must remember that this plant, like many others, is afraid of direct sunlight.
Another important point of care - is the observance of the necessary moisture. It should be maintained at a sufficiently high level, in the summer period it is recommended to spray the plant regularly - approximately 1 time in 3 days, and sometimes to wipe the leaves with a damp sponge.
In winter, such procedures are not needed. As for watering, you need to know that alokaziya loves moisture, however, in moderation. It is not necessary to pour the flower - it is better to water more often, but in small quantities, so that the top layer of soil has time to be aired - only after that you need to make the next watering.
During the period of active growth and vegetation, it will be good to fertilize Alokazia using a special balanced composition, in which a high nitrogen content is important. It is enough to produce dressing once every two to three weeks.
As for the soil, this flower, like many other tropical representatives, does not like dense formulations, ideal is medium density substrates through which the roots breathe easily. The pot should be voluminous and spacious, repot the plant enough as needed at a young age, and once every 2-3 years at the oldest.
Propagation of alokaziya can be done in different ways, but the simplest and most effective is the division by grafting or rhizome division. It's simple: if you decide to divide the rhizome, then it is enough to separate the child tubers and plant them in a separate pot, the first time the young plant is better to provide greenhouse conditions.
It is also possible in another way: simply cut a sheet with a sterile instrument and place it in water until it gives roots. Working with such a plant, do not forget that it is poisonous, therefore all manipulations should be carried out with gloves.
Here, in fact, all the basic rules, adhering to which you can grow a beautiful, healthy and strong plant, as in the photo with the best greenhouses!
