There's something super sexy about camping for the weekend or the night (tent sex??). Camping not your thing? Try glamping, a fancier version of the old weekend getaway. Hybrid hotel/campsites are popping up around the country, offering private canvas cabins, spa-like amenities, and rustic activities like horseback riding and hiking. Check out Camp Orenda in the Adirondacks, NY, the Resort at Paws Up in Montaha, MT, or El Capitan Canyon in Santa Barbara, CA, for inspiration, then book a weekend and get outside.
It used to be that days at the farm were for second-grade field trips. No more. More and more farms are allowing adults to harvest veggies or eggs and feed small animals. There may be an admission fee, but you often get to keep some of what you harvest, and the sight of your sweaty guy with a hoe will be worth it. Google "day trips" and "farms" to find one in your area.
These specialty trails, scattered throughout the country, offer artisanal cheeses, wines, and other delectable goodies just a short drive from home. Vermont is known for its cheese trail, Oregon has a loop of fruit stands, and New York has a beer trail. Choose an "official" trail of specialty shops and restaurants or design your own by heading out to the country and hitting up some local farm stands and restaurants. A cursory Google search will let you know if there's a state fair in your neighborhood, and who was ever against a road trip to Six Flags?
Even if waking up at the crack of drawn is totally painful, the experience of seeing the sunrise (and the resulting Instagram shot) will make it worth it. Bonus points for getting a selfie of the two of you kissing while the sun rises. Want to make sure you don't miss it? Click here to look up sunrise (and sunset) times in your area.
